Doomed From the Beginning

Edward's weak attempt at making his presence known by his followers has come at a poor time. At this point, no one respects him. They do not seem to view Edward as "above" them any longer. His title as King is ignored,

"[ He draws his sword. In the scuffle, Mortimer Junior and Gaveston draw also.]
"Treason! Treason! Where's the traitor?"(Act II, ii, 80)

From this we can see that the respect for the King was thrown out the window early on. To draw a sword in the presence of a King is an offense of treason. On the other hand, Edward did nothing to punish or even reprimand them. This shows his weakness and inability as a ruler.

Even people under his ruling would rather die than continue living under him.
"The worst is death, and better die to live
Than live in infamy under such a king" (Act III, iii, 23-24).
